Positive changes highlighted after Ofsted visit to Diamond Academy

A recent Ofsted Report has shown Diamond Academy in Thetford is in a strong position to improve following a visit by inspectors in October 2016.

Diamond Academy, part of the Academy Transformation Trust (ATT) family, was praised for its “leaders taking determined action to improve” following the appointment of Essex Primary Head Teacher of the Year Karen Hammond to the role of Executive Principal.

The report stated that the appointment has “brought drive and energy to the school” and “it is evident, even in the short time that they have been in the school that it is changing rapidly”.

It was reported that Diamond Academy is developing in many areas. Actions that have already had a positive impact and were applauded by the inspectors include a new behaviour management system which was resulted in good pupil behaviour and a new way of teaching subjects which “is already enthusing pupils to learn”.

Inspectors complimented the curriculum as broad and balanced with a newly introduced scheme for teaching “stimulating pupils’ enthusiasm”.

Inspectors also commended the academy’s work to promote pupils personal development and behaviour with this rated as Good in the report. The priority given by Diamond Academy to improving pupil behaviour is recognised with Ofsted commenting “levels of attendance have improved strongly and rates of persistent absence diminished since 2015”.

The academy’s pupil senate was also praised with pupils learning to be respectful of one another and express their views in a cooperative and democratic way that helps them to prepare for life in modern Britain.

The report complimented the work of ATT including the improvement made to the learning environment including the new library. The report also stated that ATT provides “valued support” in the areas of Governance and school improvement.

Karen Hammond, Executive Principal at Diamond Academy said: “I am delighted that Ofsted has recognised the changes already in place, resulting in a ‘Good’ grading for behaviour. We are constantly striving for excellence and will continue to implement actions to ensure that children at Diamond Academy reach their full potential.”

Lisa Crausby, Principal Improvement Director at Academy Transformation Trust commented: “We are delighted that the inspection team recognised the strong capacity of the new leadership team in accelerating improvements across the academy. We have every confidence that Diamond Academy will go from strength to strength and become one of the best junior schools in the area.”
