Eligibility

Your eligibility for student finance depends on:

• Your course and provider
• If you’ve studied a higher education course before
• Your age
• Your nationality or residency status

When Can I Apply?

Applications for 24/25 open at the end of March. You can still apply for funding up to 9 months after the first day of the academic year for your course. See this link for more information: https://www.gov.uk/student-finance

How Much Will I Receive?

Your tuition fees of £9,250 will be paid directly to your provider.

Additional Loans

You may be eligible for a maintenance loan, which varies between £4000 and £13000, depending on your current household income and expenses. Other funding, such as childcare grants, might also be available.

Bursary: Tax-free Financial Incentive

Bursaries are an alternate route to student finance, only available to secondary trainees. The amount you get from a bursary depends on the subject you’re training to teach.

Eligibility

Your eligibility for bursaries depends on the same factors as student finance (except for physics and maths). Salaried (School Direct) trainees are not eligible for bursaries or scholarships. Receipt of a bursary depends on your highest relevant academic award, and your ITT subject.

Do I Need to Apply?

How Much Will I Receive?

• £28,000 in chemistry, computing, mathematics and physics
• £25,000 in biology, design and technology, geography and languages (including ancient languages)
• £10,000 in art and design, English, music and RE

Bursary: Points to Note

Teachers of physics and languages from outside of the UK who secure jobs in England for the 2024/25 academic year are eligible for the International Relocation Payment (IRP). This will be split into two £5,000 payments – teachers will be eligible and able to apply for the first payment at the start of their first year and then able to apply for the second payment at the start of their second year, provided they still meet eligibility criteria. Current academic year trainees will remain eligible to receive the IRP if they meet the previously published eligibility criteria

In languages and physics, trainees starting courses in the academic year 2024 to 2025 will not need to be eligible for student finance to be eligible for a bursary or scholarship.

Scholarships are offered by independent institutions (charitable organisations with a passion for their subject area). They set their own eligibility criteria, and each scholarship body will have its own deadline for applications.

Eligibility

Scholarships are applied for separately, and only awarded to high calibre students who pass a robust application and interview process in one of the specialist subjects. School Direct (Salaried) trainees are not eligible for bursaries or scholarships.

Receiving a bursary or scholarship depends on your highest relevant academic award and your ITT subject.

How Do I Apply?

Scholarships are applied for separately to ITT. Scholarship applicants should apply to the relevant scholarship body: details are available on Get Into Teaching. The applicant must secure an ITT place on a tuition fee-based programme (provider-led or School Direct) by 1 September 2024 for the scholarship award to be valid.

How Much Will I Receive?

• £30,000 in chemistry,
  computing, mathematics
  and physics
• £27,000 in French, German
  and Spanish (no other
  languages)

Trainees cannot receive both the scholarship and training bursary.
