Session: The Emotional Labour of Headteachers During Critical Incidents

Studies have been carried out exploring the way heads lead during critical incidents. Separate to this are studies which focus on Hochschild’s concept of emotional labour as it applies to school leadership. This session brings the two ideas together; exploring the impact of emotional labour for those headteachers dealing with critical incidents that involve students. As the foundation for doctoral research, I question if enough is being done to prepare & support headteachers for such incidents.
