Kulwinder Kaur
HLTA, Caldmore Primary Academy
At the age of 23, I moved to England as my spouse was from the UK, which was a huge milestone in my life as I didn’t have my immediate family in England. I came here with very limited spoken English so found it difficult to communicate on daily basis, but joined a college to do GCSEs in English, Mathematics and Science and an ESOL qualification.
After finishing my qualifications, I decided to study for a PGCE so I could fulfil my childhood dream of becoming a teacher. After successful completion of my PGCE in Citizenship Secondary Education, I worked at various secondary schools as a supply teacher to gain more experience.
While I was working as a supply teacher, we were going through IVF treatment. After two cycles of IVF treatment, I found out I was pregnant with twins so I decided to have a break in my career in order to spend as much time as possible with my long-awaited children and faced many challenges along the way.
When my children started full time education, I decided to focus on my career again and began working as a teaching assistant to fit around family life. There was a lot of juggling between work and family life as I prepared my children for grammar schools.
When my children moved to secondary school, I decided to make the next move in my career and managed to find the job as a HLTA at Caldmore Primary Academy, which was the best move I have made. I enjoy working with incredible children and very supportive colleagues and SLT.
